Amitabh Bachchan
An Angry Young Man
of the silver screen often referred to as the
'Chora Ganga Kinare Wala' because of his Allahabad
connection is the most prized stalwart produced
by the city. A son of an illustrious father Harivansh
Rai Bachchan, Amitabh spent his childhood in the
city. He got his early education at Boys' High
School. Decades later, after passing through various
highs and lows of his life, he proved his mettle
as an actor and came to be known as 'The Superstar
of the Millennium'.
Abhinn Shyam Gupta
Among the sportspersons
of the city who have made a mark at international
level, local shutter Abhinn Shyam Gupta stands
out. Hailing from Allahabad, Abhinn has been performing
amazingly at national and international level
for quite a few years. He won French Open Badminton
Championship last year. He added another feather
to his cap when he became The National Champion.
Abhinn bagged gold medal in SAARC badminton in
1997 and Commonwealth Games held in Malaysia in
1998.
Mohammed Kaif
Mohammed Kaif is
one of the most promising cricketers in the country.
Born and brought up at Kydganj in Allahabad, he
started his Cricketing career from KN Katju School
Ground. Later he joined Green Park Sport Hostel
at Kanpur and honed his skills. Kaif came into
national prominence when he helped India to lift
the Under-19 World Cup at Sri Lanka. He brought
laurels to the country and state when he played
a match winning knock of unbeaten 87 at Lords
against England in the NatWest Trophy final.
Hari Prasad Chaurasia
Belonging to Loknath
area of the city, the ace flute artist was born
in a family of wrestlers. He learned the instrument
from his early guru Pandit Hari Prasad, went on
to become an artist of international reckoning.
Conferred with almost all awards he also had a
successful stint in Hindi films with the 'Shive-Hari'
team.
Shubha Mudgal
The celebrated singer
received her entire education in the city. Even
her early training in music began in the city
itself from her guru Ram Ashram Jha . Daughter
of academician who taught at Allahabad University,
Shubha stayed with her parents at her Bank Road
residence. Her distinctive voice established her
both as a classical artist and also Diva of the
pop world. With several albums to her credit,
she has certainly done Allahabad proud.
