Kaushambi
Kaushambi, in Uttar Pradesh, was visited by Buddha in the 6th and 9th years after his enlightenment. He delivered several sermons here, elevating it to a center of learning for Buddhists. Today one can see the ruins of an Ashokan Pillar, an old fort and the Ghositaram Monastery.

Kaushambi has been the most ancient, religious, historical and business center. The description of this place is found in Mahabhagya of Patanjali sutras of Parini. Kaushabmi was the capital of kingdom of Raja Uddayana. Kausambhi is famous since the time of Uddayana. At that time it was the capital of ‘Vatsa’ kingdom. This place got developed as importance business center sine it is at near the left bank of river ‘Yamuna’. It is for this reason that people often called it ‘Vatsa-Pattana’. In Budhha’s time this place was considered very important religious place. Gautam Buddha gave many sermons at this place and due to this place got a large number of his disciples. As per the Baudha literature, Buddha spent fifth an sixth year of his spiritual life at this place. In Anciant’ time, this city was center of political, religious and business activites. Due to the importance of this place, famous emperor Ashoka scribed his writings on pillars. Emperor of Magadha ‘Ashoka’ spent considerable time of his youth at this place and developed it as sub-capital for administration of his western part of kingdom. "Vatsa" desh is among the names of "Shodas mahajanpada" (Sixteen Big Tribes) specified in Baudha literature ‘Anguttar Nikaya’; whose capital was ‘Kaushambi’. Kaushambi also finds mention in ‘Mahabharata’ the Paricshit Grandson Arjun and ‘Ramayana’. Kaushambi finds mention in writing of Famous china traveler ‘Fah-Yan’ and ‘Ven-San’.

This ancientness and historical glory is still present even now, due to which this place is important tourist destination. Baudhya and Jain people come here in numbers. Archaeological objects are present at this place due to which students and research scholars also visit this place. Kaushabmi finds importance among the Baudha historical places. Kaushambi is situated at 53 kms south-west of Allahabad city of Uttar Pradesh state near left bank of river Yamuna.

Places worth a visit:

‘Ghoshit’ Ram Vihar: ‘Ghoshit Ram Vihar’ finds special mention in Baudha literature. It was built by a businessman of Kaushambi named ‘Ghashit’. This place was named after the name of the said businessman. This place was built for stay of Buddha and his deciples. Budhha often stayed at this place. He gave some important sermons at this place. ‘Bhagnashes’ found in excavations at this placed are at display in ‘Allahabad Museum’.

Raj Prasad Sthal: As per Majjhim Nikaya, Bodhi got a new and marvelous structure built ‘Raj Prasad’. He wanted to get it purify by welcoming Gautama Buddha for this he invited Gautama. Gautama Buddha arrived in Kaushambi with his disciples and eat at this newly built ‘Raj Prasad’. Bodhi found this to be very auspicious. After lunch, Budhha gave his sermons. Some parts of this forte have been found in excavations.

Ashoka Stambha: The stambha of Ashoka is present in Kaushabmi even today. The upper part of which has got destroyed. The place near the pillar has clear remains of the pillar.

Pariraksha Pra’kar: Excavations have found this place too.

Jain Mandir: Kausambhi has ancient digambar Jain Temple built by Lala Prabhudasa Aravala. Mandir has two devis (godess). One statue represents image and feet of lord ‘Padam Brabhu’. At one of the stones, an image of ‘Khadgasana’ is present.
      At the left a devi is sitting with a baby in her lap. At the two sides of the statue are statues of ‘Yaksha’ and ‘Yakhshini’. That idol was found in ‘Gugarbha’. Explicit are the feet at foreside of the idol. The length of the feet is 8 inches. At the center is lotus which has some writing on it which as became unreadable with the passage of time. The only readable writing is ‘Samvat 567’. At the left room, ‘Samvarg Bhadrika’ idol is situated. There is 2’ 8’’ symbol of elephant of Khadgasana idol made of white stone.

Pabhusha: This was a part of Kaushambi in ancient times. It has no separate history for itself different from that of Kaushabi. In ‘Pabhusha’ sixth ‘Teearhchar Bhagvan’ Padma Prabhu’ took deeksha from ‘Krishna Treyodashi’ and got himself completely involved in ‘Tapasya’. This place has been a place of worship for ‘Munis’. It is said once upon a time 32 prices (‘Lalit Ghat’ etc) came here in the form of ‘Munis’ and got involved with religious activities standing at the bank of Yamuna. It is said that a great flood came at the same time and all of them were taken away by the flood. In memory of this there are 32 graves (samadhis) here which is under control of ‘Hindu’ people.
